| Artist Statement
I, Denise Collins, am a sculptor and reside and work in Ft. Lauderdale, Florida. I became aware of my talent late in life quite by chance after being introduced to a sculpture class by my cousin, Edith Humphreys. I sculpt masks, torsos, figures, busts, bas relief, animals (stylized and realistic) and, stylized forms. My sculptures are influenced by many different aspects of life’s surroundings, particularly concentrating on human expressions, and fashioning my pieces to portray motion and fluidity.
My medium to date has been clay, specifically, Lizella, which is extremely porous. After firing my pieces, I apply a patina (thin coat of painted finish), which differs depending on the amount of surface texture on the piece. I currently share a studio in the Tarpon River Art Center located on Flager Street in down town Ft. Lauderdale, where many of my pieces are on display.
I am striving to refine my sculpting techniques and raise my artistic skills to another level of creativity.
